The scientific method is one of mankind’s greatest achievements. It has allowed us to go from nomadic extractivism to space exploration in just a few thousand years. The idea of investigating, imagining scenarios, structuring hypotheses, using experimentation to validate ideas, and sharing discoveries is, above all, a way of thinking and seeing the world. In Maple Bear schools, the learning process begins with the engagement of the students. The teacher transmits the content, but builds the process by supporting the students in formulating questions.
He or she encourages questioning, curiosity, and imagination, and leads everyone in the process of experimentation and investigation. The goal is to awaken the pleasure of discovery. In early childhood education classes, for example, the teacher is not limited to showing a theory or merely a drawing from a book. If the proposal is to talk about objects that float or sink in water, it is not enough to say so.
You have to demonstrate. This is a process that is very present in the development of knowledge and student learning in the Maple Bear classroom,” says Phyllis Hildebrandt, Academic Director of Maple Bear Global. Students are involved in situations of doubt and engagement. As early as Elementary year 2, Maple Bear schools begin to provide labs. “The differential is not doing experiments at specific times. It’s having the scientific method as a way of working as part of the daily routine in the classroom,” says the academic director. Students have a laboratory at their disposal to build knowledge and develop new specific skills.
The method and the search for knowledge become part of the mind and thinking of every child and young person. They take science as a way of thinking and discovery.
