What is SLM?

Maple Bear provides all of its schools the excellence of Canadian teaching. This is possible through the creation of an original program of its own design. It is based on the best classroom practices and from recent research in the fields of neuroscience and cognitive psychology. This innovative approach is backed up by six pillars:

1. An extensive calendar of training for teachers and coordinators; 2. Pedagogic support; 3. Reference documents; 4. Support guides; 5. Subject planning; and 6. Maple Bear’s exclusive learning materials for its students – the Student Learning Materials (SLMs).

The SLMs are part of this “ecosystem” using a variety of resources that support our curriculum’s pedagogic proposals. Each grade has a specific resource kit, suitable to the learning objectives for that grade and aligned to the principle of gradual responsibility release. This means that, while the student grows up, it is expected that he/she becomes more and more autonomous and responsible for his/her own learning.

The Maple Bear team continuously strives to improve the supporting documents. Besides the physical material, the student gets access to the DLC (Digital Learning Community). This online platform is a gateway to digital resources carefully chosen to widen the student’s repertoire. Among them are the digital libraries for students in elementary, middle years and high school, and a digital portfolio connected to the application process for foreign universities.

Also available are platforms for independent studies, entrance exam preparation and complementary activities for knowledge extension. As with the Maple Bear methodology, the SLMs place the student in the centre of the learning process, stimulate collaborative work, experimentation and problem resolution.

These are fundamental skills for the 21st-century citizen. More than ever, it is necessary to “learn to learn” and this is reflected in the school materials which encourages exploration and discovery. With the need for hybrid teaching, the SLMs are now a passport for a truly global learning community. This borderless world is now attainable for Maple Bear students.
